The purple squirrel of Hants

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The purple squirrel of HantsAccording to an article there is a purple squirrel which appeared at a school has baffled experts who are unable to explain its colour at Meoncross School in Stubbington, Hants.

Since the squirrel, now nicknamed Pete, was first seen, it has become a regular fixture at the school but no one has been able to say whether the animal has fallen into purple paint, had a run-in with some purple dye, or whether there is another explanation.

Dr Mike Edwards, an English teacher, said: “I was sitting in my classroom and looked out the window and saw it sitting on the fence. I had to do a double take.

“Since then it’s been a bit of a regular at the school – everyone’s seen it.

“We thought it might have been paint or something but then when you look at it up close, it’s an all over coat, not in patches like you’d expect if it had been near some paint.

“Its fur actually looks purple all the way through. It’s an absolute mystery.”

Pupils, staff and parents have contacted vets and even e-mailed television nature expert Bill Oddie to see if an explanation could be found.

Lorraine Orridge, the school’s registrar, believes Pete’s coloured fur looks like a school uniform.

Oil tycoon’s wife to ride to the rescue of wild horses

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Billionare's wife to help rescue horsesMadeleine Pickens, wife of the eccentric billionaire tycoon T. Boone Pickens, wants to ride to the rescue of a beleaguered national icon. The wild horses that have been an emblem of the wide-open American West for centuries more recently became a major headache for the federal government, which routinely removes some of the horses from 1o Western states to prevent overpopulation and protect grazing land. But as the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) holding facilities grew crowded, federal officials gingerly announced that they were considering a euthanasia program to cull the herds at their facilities and contain costs.

The plight of these horses is still in the wind and news is a little scarce; but it’s very good to hear that there are those out there with the means as well as the passion to help them out.

This one has been in the making for a bit–and we’re not ones to just churn up old news–but for any horse advocates and enthusiasts this is probably something to look to.

Pilots N Paws rescuing dogs from euthanasia with wings of love

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

USA Today is running a story on their website about an organization called Pilots N Paws. A group of merciful aviators who wait for connections to be made between families/shelters and dogs that would otherwise be euthanized.

“Pilots N Paws has given about 20 of our animals a second chance,” says Tim Adams, executive director of the Young-Williams shelter, which euthanizes 70% of the animals that land there. “We take in 17,000 animals a year, and Knoxville simply isn’t big enough… to get new homes for them here. Twenty animals saved may not sound like much, but every one of them matters.”

Pilots N Paws started operating in February soon after Wehrenberg offered to fly a Doberman in Florida to his pal Debi Boies of Landrum, S.C., who is a retired nurse, horse breeder and long-time rescuer. He began asking questions about the rescue world and learned about the passionate underground railroad of animal lovers who orchestrate days-long road journeys to save some of the 4 million to 6 million animals destined for euthanasia in U.S. shelters annually.

“I’d had no idea of the number of animals being euthanized, and the ordeal people and animals were going through in transports,” Wehrenberg says. “Pilots love to fly. I believed that if we created a means for them to discover situations where they could fly and also save animals, many would do it.”

Reminder: Puppy Mill Action Week Nov 16th – 22nd

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I know that we already mentioned this, but it’s such an important issue to educate the public about we’re bringing it up again. Go get more information from stoppuppymills.org to see how you can take part. This is an HSUS sponsored week trying to get the public involved with educating themselves and their local pet shops about the reality of puppy mills.

If you have any experiences or stories you’d like to share with us about how your own efforts have gone, we invite you to bring them to us in the comments below.

Puppy Mill Action Week

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Join the Humane Society of the United States this upcoming November 16th through the 22nd in their second annual Puppy Mill Action Week. We are trying to bring attention from the public to the reality of puppy mills during the peak of puppy buying season: the holidays.

This year during Puppy Mill Action Week, The HSUS asks that consumers work with local pet stores to encourage them to develop and implement “puppy friendly” policies, like refusing to sell puppies in their store and supporting shelter adoptions instead.

According to Stephanie Shain, puppy mill expert and director of The HSUS’ Stop Puppy Mills campaign, “Thousands of people have already signed our pledge to stop puppy mills, promising not to shop at stores where puppies are sold, and to never purchase a dog from a pet store or over the Internet. This year’s action week asks that consumers work with local pet stores and encourage them to support animal shelters rather than selling puppies. People should never buy a dog from a pet store or over the Internet.
