Volunteer Help needed in Tempe/Phoenix area

Monday, November 9th, 2009

We are reaching out to people who might know of volunteer organizations, school kids, senior volunteers or anyone else who may have time to help us with an interesting situation. Three weeks ago 30+ dogs were rescued from a very bad situation in Eagar, AZ. Those dogs were rescued and transported to Phoenix, where they are at University Vets in Tempe. The dogs are looking for foster homes and while people are trying to place them in foster homes, they need people who can come down and walk them, spend time throwing a ball, and giving them treats.

Two to three people have been doing the job of several and are close to burn out in terms of trying to help these pooches. An hour a couple of times a week could make a difference in socializing these dogs and actually saving their lives. We’re looking for people who would be willing to go down to the Vet hospital and spend some time in the outdoor recreation area with these animals.

This could be a great project for student groups, volunteer groups, etc. We’re reaching out to people that don’t normally get the constant barrage of emails to save animals in hopes that you may have the time, inclination, and ideas of how we can help with this small task. Do you have any interest? If so contact myself at this email address or by phone: 480-951-1882; or Julia Wesley (juliawesley@cox.net).

Also, if you know someone who would like to foster a dog for a week or two, while people find homes for these incredible dogs, please feel free to let us know that as well.

What is a Tabby Cat?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Interestingly, many people think that Tabby is a breed of cat. Not true; tabby is actually a pattern and not a breed.

The tabby pattern can be found in many breeds of cat and even mixed-breed cats. There are basically four tabby patterns that are genetically distinct including the mackerel, classic, spotted, and ticked in colors like brown, orange, gray, silver, and red. Mackerel tabbies are the most common and they have narrow striped coats along the sides of their bodies. Classic tabbies have a swirling pattern and often have distinctive bulls-eyes on their sides. Spotted tabbies have a more spotted pattern and ticked tabbies have individually striped hairs rather that striped coats. Most tabby cats have the distinctive M-shaped mark on their foreheads.

Some of the most famous tabbies of all time include Morris the 9 Lives “spokes cat”, cartoon cats Heathcliff and Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt’s gray polydactyl tabby. A recent addition to the list of most famous tabby cats may be the most famous of all. She is a gray tabby cat named Nora, who was rescued from a NJ shelter and became an overnight UTube sensation. Her 2007 debut video showcased her piano playing skills in a duet with her owner. This video has been viewed over 15.8 million times to date and two sequel videos have been released since that time.

Do you have a special tabby cat in your life that you would like to see featured on the PETS 911 Facebook page? Submit a video or photo and a short note about what makes your tabby special to info@pets911.com.

Cats with fraudulent university diplomas

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Apparently there are some institutions of higher learning out there that aren’t all they’re cracked up to be—or perhaps, cats are simply a lot smarter about human technology than we may know. For now, though, skeptics happen to use their housecats for the purpose of determining of a university or college rumored to be a diploma mill happens to be much maligned and legit or willing to hand out a diploma to anything with a heartbeat.

Or in this case, a meow.

Enterprising Wikipedians have gotten together a list of these cats with fancy credentials for everyone to enjoy.

400966353_1bde821628 Colby Nolan is a housecat who was awarded an MBA degree in 2004 by Trinity Southern University, a Dallas, Texas-based diploma mill, sparking a fraud lawsuit by the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office.[1]…

Ben Goldacre, a UK-based science journalist, obtained a diploma in nutrition from the American Association of Nutritional Consultants for his dead cat, Henrietta, while investigating allegations about fake qualifications.[5]
