Join the Humane Society of the United States this upcoming November 16th through the 22nd in their second annual Puppy Mill Action Week. We are trying to bring attention from the public to the reality of puppy mills during the peak of puppy buying season: the holidays.
This year during Puppy Mill Action Week, The HSUS asks that consumers work with local pet stores to encourage them to develop and implement “puppy friendly” policies, like refusing to sell puppies in their store and supporting shelter adoptions instead.
According to Stephanie Shain, puppy mill expert and director of The HSUS’ Stop Puppy Mills campaign, “Thousands of people have already signed our pledge to stop puppy mills, promising not to shop at stores where puppies are sold, and to never purchase a dog from a pet store or over the Internet. This year’s action week asks that consumers work with local pet stores and encourage them to support animal shelters rather than selling puppies. People should never buy a dog from a pet store or over the Internet.

You know, the phrase “puppy mill” has always made me think of windmills, grinding stones, and warm, fresh bread with doggy ears.
It’s good to see people actively campaigning against pet stores who sell puppies from puppy mills.
I stopped buying from places like that a long time ago, but I’m afraid many people still don’t realize what they’re supporting by buying from them. Thanks for trying to get them informed HSUS!
For anyone who is interested in stopping puppy mill activity, if you’re not sure where the dogs at a certain pet store are from, you can ask them or do some research. The less reputable places may lie to you, but places like Petsmart only have adoptable dogs and cats in their stores, and they proudly advertise that fact.
I JUST LOST “PRECIOUS”, THAT IS WHAT I NAMED HER. SHE WAS ONLY 8 WEEKS OLD AND DIED A FEW DAYS AFTER I HAD HER. I FOUND OUT THAT SHE WAS BOUGHT NOT THRU A BREEDER BUT A BROKER WITH A LONG LIST OF LYING TO CUSTOMERS ABOUT WHERE THE PUPPIES COME FROM, PUPPY MILLS WHERE THERE IS ABUSE OF EVERY SORT ALLOWED AND ENCOURAGED ALL FOR MONETARY PROFIT. OH…THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL USING MAN’S BEST FRIEND IN SUCH A HEINIOUS WAY.
I AM BROKEN HEARTED AND JUST WHEN I THINK I AM OVERCOMING THE SORROW OF SEEING A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE PUPPY THAT WAS TRULY PRECIOUS,-JUST BEGINNING TO BARELY LIVE-DIE, SO PATHETICALLY, IN PAIN AND SUFFERING THEN THE PAIN OF SUCH LOSS AND INJUSTICE TO GOD’S CREATURE THAT WAS ENTITLED TO THE GIFT OF LIFE, COMES OVER ME AGAIN AND AGAIN. HOW CAN ANYONE GO TO SLEEP AT NIGHT WHO MAKES A LIVING THIS WAY? EVIL DOES EXIST AND MUST BE STOPPED BY US WHO WILL SPEAK OUT IN BEHALF OF THE INNOCENT. JEAN SULLA
Wow, I am really sad to hear that, Jean, that’s horrible what you went through. Hopefully, with effort and tenacity, the people who create situations like this can be pushed out of the market. The more people who know to dig into the background of the stores they’re buying from, adopt from shelters/rescues, and the like, the less profitable that puppy mills will be.
