It would be great if someone close to his family would suggest a breed they could bet on. My cousin has a son with asthma, and he cannot be around "mutts", so she got him a full blood maltese, and they have not had any problems. Many rescues have full blood breeds, some may have been rescued from puppy mills or given up by breeders going out of business. The poodle and Bichon Frise are known to be hypoallergenic. Also, another great choice for them, in my opinion, would be a miniature schnauzer, as they are known to be hypoallergenic, they like children, and are very loyal family dogs.

At this point, if the Obama family chooses a pet, it would also become a presidential scandal to have to give up the First Dog! I too hope that they choose well.

Thanks for the thought, Elizabeth.

it's great he wants to adopt a pet. hope he picks a good one as i also have allergies to animals and in addition have asthma. some pets that are mixed may cause many problems for a child with allergies and NO being around pets all my life did not prevent the allergies as some suggest now. I was around dogs and cats, and other animals since I was a baby. i now have a yorkie but they are tiny and fragile so probably not sturdy enough for children as young as his youngest daughter. unless they find something that is non dander, shedding they risk their daughters health and later emotional scarring having to get rid of the pet .... so be careful.

What a great idea!! I volunteer at a multi animal rescue including horses. I suggest a schnaupoo (small version) as the hypo-allergenic solution for the Obamas.
